2-4. Names of the 16 Vargas: "Lord Brahmā has described 16 kinds of Vargas (Divisions) for each Rāśi. Listen to them. Their names are Rāśi, Horā, Drekkana, Caturthāṁśa, Saptāṁśa, Navāṁśa, Daśāṁśa, Dvādaṣāṁśa, Ṣoḍaṣāṁśa, Vimṣāṁśa, Caturvimṣāṁśa, Saptavimṣāṁśa, Trimṣāṁśa, Khavedāṁśa, Akṣavedāṁśa and Ṣaṣtyāṁśa."

BPHS Chapter 6 Slokas 5-6
5-6. Rāśi and Horā: The Rāśi owned by a Graha is called its Kṣetra (field). The first half of an odd Rāśi is the Horā ruled by Sūrya. While the second half is the Horā of Candra. The reverse is true in the case of an even Rāśi. Half of a Rāśi is called Horā. These total 24, counted from Meṣa and repeated twice in the whole zodiac.

BPHS Chapter 6 Slokas 7-8 7-8. Drekkana: One third of a Rāśi is called Drekkana. These are totally 36, counted from Meṣa, repeating thrice at the rate of 12 per round. The 1st, 5th and the 9th Rāśis from a Rāśi are its three Drekkanas and are, respectively, lorded by Nārada, Agastya and Durvāsā. |

BPHS Chapter 6 Slokas 10-11 10-11. Saptāṁśa: The Saptāṁśa (one seventh of a Rāśi) counting commences from the same Rāśi in the case of an odd Rāśi. It is from the seventh Rāśi thereof, while an even Rāśi is considered. The names of the seven divisions in odd Rāśis are Kṣāra-kṣīra, Dadhi, Ghrith, Ikṣu, Rasa, Madhya and Śuddha Jala. These designations are reversed for an even Rāśi. |

BPHS Chapter 6 Sloka 12
12. Navāṁśa: The Navāṁśa calculation are for a Movable Rāśi from there itself, for a Fixed Rāśi from the 9th thereof and for a Dual Rāśi from the 5th thereof. They go by designations Deva (divine), Manuṣya (human) and Rākṣasa (devilish) in a successive and repetitive order for a Movable Rāśi. (Manuṣya, Rākṣasa and Deva are the order for a Fixed Rāśi, while Rākṣasa, Manuṣya and Deva are a Dual Rāśi’s order.)

BPHS Chapter 6 Slokas 13-14 13-14. Daśāṁśa: Starting from the same Rāśi for an odd Rāśi, and from the 9th with reference to an even Rāśi, the 10 Daṣāṁśas, each of 3 degrees, are reckoned. These are presided over by the ten rulers of the cardinal directions, viz. Indra, Agni, Yama, Rākṣasa, Varuṇa, Vāyu, Kuvera, Īśān, Brahmā and Ananta in case of an odd Rāśi. It is in the reverse order, that these presiding deities are reckoned, when an even Rāśi is given. |

BPHS Chapter 6 Sloka 15 15. Dvādaṣāṁśa: The reckoning of the Dvādaṣāṁśa (one twelfth of a Rāśi, or 2°30’ each) commences from the same Rāśi. In each Rāśi the rulership repeats thrice in the order of Gaṇeśa, Aśvinī Kumāra, Yama and Sarpa for the 12 Dvadaṣāṁśas.

Ṣoḍaṣāṁśa (or Kalāṁśa): Starting from Meṣa for a Movable Rāśi, from Siṁha for a Fixed Rāśi and from Dhanuḥ for a Dual Rāśi, the 16 Ṣoḍaṣāṁśas (1/16th of a Rāśi, or 1°52’30”) are regularly distributed. The presiding deities of these repeat in the order Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva and Sūrya four times in the case of an odd Rāśi. It is reverse in the case of an even Rāśi, that these ruling deities are understood.

BPHS Chapter 6 Slokas 17-21 17-21. Vimṣāṁśa: From Meṣa for a Movable Rāśi, from Dhanuḥ for a Fixed Rāśi and from Siṁha for a Common Rāśi: this is how the calculations of Vimṣāṁśas (1/20th of a Rāśi, or 1°30’ each) are to commence. The presiding deities of the 20 Vimṣāṁśas in an odd Rāśi are, respectively: Kali, Gauri, Jaya, Lakṣmī, Vijaya, Vimal, Sati, Tara, Jvalamukhi, Sveta, Lalita, Bagalamukhi, Pratyangir, Shachi, Raudri, Bhavani, Varad, Jaya, Tripura and Sumukhi. In an even Rāśi these 20 deities are, respectively, Daya, Megha, Chinnasi, Pisachini, Dhumavathi, Matangi, Bal, Bhadr, Arun, Anal, Pingal, Chuchchuk, Ghora, Vaarahi, Vaishnavi, Sita, Bhuvanesvari, Bhairavi, Maṅgal and Aparajit. |

BPHS Chapter 6 Slokas 22-23 22-23. Caturvimṣāṁśa: The Caturvimṣāṁśa (1/24th part of a Rāśi, or 1°15’ each) distribution commences from Siṁha and Karkaṭa, respectively, for an odd and an even Rāśi. In the case of an odd Rāśi the ruling deities repeat twice in the order of Skand, Parusdhar, Anal, Vishwakarma, Bhag, Mitr, Maya, Antaka, Vrisha-Dwaja, Govinda, Madan and Bhima. Reverse these from Bhima twice to know the deities for the Caturvimṣāṁśa in an even Rāśi.

Saptavimṣāṁśa (Nakṣatrāṁśa, or Bhāṁśa): The Saptavimṣāṁśa Lords are, respectively, the presiding deities of the 27 Nakṣatras, as under: Dastra (Aśvinī Kumāra), Yama, Agni, Brahmā, Candra, Isa, Adhiti, Jiva, Ahi, Pitar, Bhag, Aryama, Sūrya, Tvasht, Marut, Cakraagni, Mitr, Vasava, Rākṣasa, Varuṇa, Vishwadeva, Govinda, Vasu, Varuṇa, Ajap, Ahirbuddhnya and Puṣyā. These are for an odd Rāśis. Count these deities in a reverse order for an even Rāśi. The Saptavimṣāṁśa distribution commences from Meṣa and other Movable Rāśis for all the 12 Rāśis. |

BPHS Chapter 6 Slokas 27-28 27-28. Trimṣāṁśa: The Trimṣāṁśa Lords for an odd Rāśi are Maṅgal, Śani, Guru, Budha and Śukra. Each of them in order rules 5, 5, 8, 7 and 5 degrees. The deities, ruling over the Trimṣāṁśaas, are, respectively, Agni, Vāyu, Indra, Kuvera and Varuṇa. In the case of an even Rāśi the quantum of Trimṣāṁśa, Graha lordship and deities get reversed.

BPHS Chapter 6 Slokas 29-30 29-30. Khavedāṁśa (or Chatvarimṣāṁśa, 1/40th part of a Rāśi): For odd Rāśis count from Meṣa and for an even Rāśi from Tula in respect of Khavedāṁśas (each of 45’ of arc). Viṣṇu, Candra, Marichi, Tvasht, Dhata, Śiva, Ravi, Yama, Yaksh, Gandharv, Kāla and Varuṇa repeat successively, as presiding deities, in the same order for all Rāśis.

Akṣavedāṁśa (1/45th part of a Rāśi): Meṣa, Siṁha and Dhanuḥ are the Rāśis, from which the distributions, respectively, commence for Movable, Immovable and Common Rāśis. In Movable Rāśis Brahmā, Śiva and Viṣṇu; in Immovable Rāśis Śiva, Viṣṇu and Brahmā and in Common Rāśis Viṣṇu, Brahmā and Śiva repeat 15 times the presidentship over these Akṣavedāṁśas.

BPHS Chapter 6 Slokas 33-41 33-41. Ṣaṣṭiāṁśa (1/60th part of a Rāśi, or half a degree each). To calculate the Ṣaṣṭiāṁśa Lord ignore the Rāśi position of a Graha and take the degrees etc. it traversed in that Rāśi. Multiply that figure by 2 and divide the degrees by 12. Add 1 to the remainder, which will indicate the Rāśi, in which the Ṣaṣṭiāṁśa falls. The Lord of that Rāśi is the Graha, ruling the said Ṣaṣṭiāṁśa.

BPHS Chapter 6 Slokas 42-53 42-53. Varga Classification: Maitreya, explained now are the sum effects of classifications of different divisions (or Vargas, so far narrated). These are four kinds: Ṣad-Varga, Sapta-Varga, Daśā-Varga and Ṣoḍaṣā-Varga.
In the Ṣad-Varga classification the Varga designations are Kimshuk, Vyanjan, Chamar, Chatr and Kundal, according to a Graha being in 2 to 6 combinations of good Vargas.
Next is the Sapta-Varga, in which these classifications continue in the same manner up to six combinations of good Vargas, the 7th additional Varga getting classified as Mukut. |
